Maintenance Tips & FAQs

My check engine light stays on, how long can I drive with this on?

The check engine light should always come on when you start your car, as a light bulb test, but if it stays on, there’s a potential major problem.  See our car repair indicator definitions.

Top 3 Reasons Your Check Engine Light Comes On

What mainly causes tire damage?

In most cases tire damage is caused from low tire pressure. When you have new tires installed they set the recommended tire pressures. This doesn’t mean they will stay at this setting forever. Check your own tire pressures especially before a long trip. A soft tire is harder to roll, and creates drag, which decreases fuel mileage. If your pressures are fine, and your tires have damage, maybe its your front end alignment, which is easily corrected and not a very expensive fix.

How do I know if my car needs a tune up?

You may notice a decrease in fuel mileage.  Your car may be running rough.  You may notice a lack of power.  If your check engine light stays on, this could also be an indication that your car is ready for a tune up. Your owners manual may have a suggested tune up at a specific mileage.

When should I replace my timing belt?

Timing belts are very durable, but definitely wear out over time. The timing of your valves is critical to a smooth running motor, and a little wear can effect engine performance substantially. Most autos recommend a new timing belt between 65,000 and 125,000 miles.

Why is it recommended to change oil every 3,000 miles?

Oil loses its ability to lubricate each time you run your motor.  The high temperatures of your engine heat your oil to over 200 degrees very quickly.  This as well as fuel and exhaust carbons mix with the oil turning it black in color, also adds to the reduction of its ability to lubricate.  The viscosity of oil has been tested over and over, and has been determined around 3,000 miles as a point where the oil starts to break down and become less effective.  Changing your oil regularly is one of the most important things you can do for your engine, and that’s why we offer one of the most affordable Eugene oil change specials in town.
